Pye Hastings: "I worried whether doing a solo project was the right thing to do"

He may be known for a near 50-year career in Caravan, but Pye Hastings is now releasing his first proper solo album at the age of 70. Prog finds out why it took him so long...

Pye Hastings is not exactly a peripatetic musician. On the contrary, he’s spent his entire career with just one band, namely Caravan. But now he’s branching out, having just released his first solo album From The Half House. Mind you, he has pulled in Caravan members Jimmy Hastings (flute, clarinet, soprano saxophone), Jan Schelhaas (keyboards) and Mark Walker (drums) to help him out, as well as jazz fusion guitarist John Etheridge, with the main man himself featured on guitar, bass and vocals. Is this the belated beginning of a solo career? Hastings himself provides the answers…
