Nick Menza died of natural causes, says coroner
Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza’s cause of death has been listed as natural causes by officials
Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza died of natural causes, officials have stated.
He collapsed on stage on May 21 with his current band Ohm, and passed away soon afterwards. Eyewitness accounts suggested he’d suffered a severe heart attack.
Now that view has been confirmed by the County Of Los Angeles Department Of Medical Examiner-Coroner, who list a single cause of death as “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.” The case has been closed.
One person who attended the Baked Potato venue in Studio City, California, told Blabbermouth: “It appeared to be a seizure. Nick stopped breathing. Two patrons began CPR until EMS arrived. EMS worked on him for 25-plus minutes, including adrenaline shots, three shocks and non-stop compressions.”
Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine later described Menza as “a great friend, a true professional and a larger-than-life personality.” He staged a moment’s silence for his former colleague at the band’s next show, and he’s confirmed that he’s planning a tribute concert, with every surviving former member of the band invited to take part.
The drummer’s family said earlier this week: “Thank you to everyone who has extended such warm and loving condolences. There will be an announcement soon on news of memorial plans, and Dave Mustaine has very lovingly and graciously announced that he is planning a benefit show for Nick’s sons.”
