Korn's Jonathan Davis 'ripped open his soul' while writing upcoming album

Korn guitarist Brian 'Head' Welch says vocalist bared his soul as band wrote music specifically for a live audience

Korn wrote their upcoming album to help them better connect with the crowd at their live shows, Brian 'Head' Welch says.

The guitarist says that vocalist Jonathan Davis "grabbed his soul and ripped it open" on the "intense" follow-up to 2013's The Paradigm Shift.

Head tells HardDrive Radio: "I would definitely describe the new Korn music as intense. I was telling someone earlier that we wrote this record thinking about what Korn was when we first started.

"I think we've learned how to write songs – we can write good songs a lot. But what is Korn?

"We started this band thinking of the live shows and what the crowd would do with us. How can we connect with the crowd? And we would write songs thinking like that.

"So this new record, it was all about, 'What's going to happen when we play this song?' What's going to happen when we play this riff? And that's the new record. It's just intense."

Head continues: "Every song, I think, is a live song. And so it's gonna be hard to choose which ones we play live, because that's how the whole record's written. Jonathan always digs deep and shares painful stuff, but I feel like he grabbed his soul and ripped it open for this record again, like he used to do, and people are gonna feel that."

Korn plan to release the album this year.

The band have a run of shows scheduled over the summer before they kick off their Nocturnal Underground tour with Breaking Benjamin in September.
