Green Day will release a new single called Bang Bang next week, they’ve confirmed.

The single will be released on August 11 and is the punk trio’s first new music since last year’s Christmas track Xmas Time Of The Year.

The band say: “Dear friends. Green Day is putting out a new single called Bang Bang on August 11. Stay tuned for more details.”

Last year, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said the band would take their time with what will be their 12th album, which will be the follow-up to 2012’s series of albums ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!. It is not clear whether Bang Bang will appear on the album or whether it will be a standalone single.

Of the writing process, he said: “It’s going in the right direction – there’s definitely a great spirit going on. We’re honouring music. We want to make a great album.”

Green Day were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last year.

They were the subject of 2015 movie Heart Like A Hand Grenade, which focused on the on the making-of the band’s smash hit 2004 album American Idiot. The American Idiot stage show also made its debut in the UK this year.
