Against Me! have revealed the inspiration behind their new track 333.

They’ve release a video for the song which features on new album Shape Shift With Me. The promo stars actor Natasha Lyonne. And guitarist and singer Laura Jane Grace says she wrote it after a “profound” museum visit while the band were in Spain.

Grace exclusively tells TeamRock: “Last May we were on tour in Europe and I woke up on the bus in Bilboa, Spain. There were a couple of hours to kill before soundcheck so we all went to the Guggenheim.

“I’ve never been as moved by an art museum experience before. I can’t even begin to explain how profound it was to me. In that moment, I really just felt how truly lucky I was to be there in Spain, on tour with my band, travelling, playing music, having adventures – living.

“The lyrics were inspired by exhibits there at the Guggenheim – 150 Marilyns is an Andy Warhol painting, The Renowned Orders Of The Night is a painting by Anselm Kiefer, while The Tarot Garden is a reference to Nikki De Saint Phalle.

“I came back from the museum and wrote the song after soundcheck. The band had actually all left so I made a stage hand sit down behind the drums and work it out with me!”

As for Lyonne’s appearance in the video for 333, Grace says the actor’s involvement was down to the promo’s director Ione Skye Lee.

Grace continues: “Natasha is friends with Ione Skye Lee. Ione is married to Ben Lee who is a friend of the band. Ben actually did a full cover version of our album New Wave back in 2007.

“We really didn’t have much of a budget at all for this, though, and Ione is due full credit for making it all happen. It was a passion project for all involved and I’m very thankful for it.”

Grace reveals that 333 is representative of the other tracks on Shape Shift With Me and adds: “There’s a full range of the emotional spectrum present on the album.

333 is a really at heart an optimistic and positive song, but there’s a crazed mania present in it that’s present through the whole album. It’s definitely representative of the feeling of momentum we wanted to capture with the album. It’s a record that was written on the road and this song trucks along down the highway just so.”

Shape Shift With Me will be released on September 16 and Against Me! will tour Europe in December.
