Hat Fitz & Cara Robinson: Do Tell

Album Review

Irish-Australian husband and wife duo continue to impress.

Bear-like Aussie blues giant Hat Fitz has been a well-loved fixture on the Antipodean scene for years, but his recent pairing with Irish soul singer Cara Robinson is proving fruitful, and they sound better than ever on this third album.

There’s a touch of Elkie Brooks about Robinson’s vocals on opening number Friday Night, but Fitz’s Seasick Steve-style grunt and hyperactive slide guitar offset that with something altogether more rootsy on the fuzz-caked boogie of Gotta Love and the bucolic Sister Sister, while Robinson can play the sweet folky innocent as well as the bar-room belter. All of which makes for a surprisingly varied listen that never loses its downhome charm.
